Hot Methane Line Lists for Exoplanet and Brown Dwarf Atmospheres
نویسندگان
چکیده
We present comprehensive experimental line lists of methane (CH4) at high temperatures obtained by recording Fourier transform infrared emission spectra. Calibrated line lists are presented for the temperatures 300–1400◦C at twelve 100◦C intervals spanning the 960–5000 cm−1 (2.0–10.4μm) region of the infrared. This range encompasses the dyad, pentad, and octad regions, i.e., all fundamental vibrational modes along with a number of combination, overtone and hot bands. Using our CH4 spectra, we have estimated empirical lower state energies (Elow in cm−1) and our values have been incorporated into the line lists along with line positions (ν̃ in cm−1) and calibrated line intensities (S ′ in cm molecule−1). We expect our hot CH4 line lists to find direct application in the modeling of planetary atmospheres and brown dwarfs.

Spectrum of hot methane in astronomical objects using a comprehensive computed line list.
Hot methane spectra are important in environments ranging from flames to the atmospheres of cool stars and exoplanets. A new spectroscopic line list, 10to10, for (12)CH4 containing almost 10 billion transitions is presented. This comprehensive line list covers a broad spectroscopic range and is applicable for temperatures up to 1,500 K. Previous methane data are incomplete, leading to underesti...
متن کاملThe Brown Dwarf - Exoplanet Connection
Brown dwarfs are commonly regarded as easily-observed templates for exoplanet studies, with comparable masses, physical sizes and atmospheric properties. There is indeed considerable overlap in the photospheric temperatures of the coldest brown dwarfs (spectral classes L and T) and the hottest exoplanets. However, the properties and processes associated with brown dwarf and exoplanet atmosphere...
متن کاملExoMol: molecular line lists for exoplanet and other atmospheres
The discovery of extrasolar planets is one of the major scientific advances of the last two decades. Hundreds of planets have now been detected and astronomers are beginning to characterize their composition and physical characteristics. To do this requires a huge quantity of spectroscopic data most of which are not available from laboratory studies. The ExoMol project will offer a comprehensiv...
متن کاملMethane Opacities in T Dwarf Atmospheres
We present the current status of PHOENIX model atmospheres for dwarfs of the spectral type T, typical for older field brown dwarfs and low-mass brown dwarfs. The results are based on new predictions of the CH4 line opacities from theoretical calculations with the STDS software package, extrapolating to transitions from rotational levels up to J = 40. While individual line positions and strength...
متن کاملTemperature-dependent molecular absorption cross sections for exoplanets and other atmospheres
Exoplanets, and in particular hot ones such as hot Jupiters, require very significant quantities of molecular spectroscopic data to model radiative transport in their atmospheres or to interpret their spectra. This data is commonly provided in the form of very extensive transition line lists. The size of these line lists is such that constructing a single model may require the consideration of ...
